Hamburg climbed to the summit of the Bundesliga table with a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich.

Jurgen Klinsmann's Bayern would have gone top if they had avoided defeat in the first league match after a six-week winter break.

There was little to choose between the sides but Hamburg claimed victory thanks to Mladen Petric's headed goal just before half-time.

Klinsmann threw on a third striker when Landon Donovan, on loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy, went on for the last 15 minutes to pile on the pressure.

Bayern created several opportunities but could not force an equaliser and are now one point behind their rivals in third place.
